St Ambrose maintains a sister parish link to Cristo Negro de Escipulas parish in Chinique, Guatemala. The parish is led by Father Santos Perez Martinez who has visited us here at St Ambrose many times over the last decade.
The parish is more than 400 years old but had struggled for many years without a priest until Father Santos was assigned to the parish in 2015. Since then the parish has restored its small colonial church and has recently restored several small adobe buildings to create a parish center and the help of St Ambrose’s generosity has contributed to those efforts.
St Ambrose also contributes to 25 scholarships offered to parish youth at the junior high, high school, university and, in one case, professional school level.
Father Albert is from Kenya and Father Jim who recently retired worked as a pastor in Central America for several months. They remind us by their example that we are a universal church in communion across national borders. We offer Chinique monetary support and they inspire us with their gratitude, humility and steadfast commitment to our faith.
Bruce Martin and Vicki Nelson visit our sister parish once or more each year.
